Omar Abdullah Requests Lifting Ban on Jamaat-e-Islami for Assembly Polls

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has called on the Centre to lift the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir (JeI) to facilitate its participation in the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. This appeal followed statements from Ghulam Qadir Wani, the former chief of JeI, expressing the organization's willingness to engage in the electoral process if the prohibition is reversed. The ban on JeI was initially imposed in February 2019 for a duration of five years, citing reasons related to unlawful activities and threats to internal security and public order, with an extension announced until February 2024.

Call to Lift Ban for Polls

During an election rally in Tangmarg, Baramulla district, Abdullah highlighted the importance of allowing JeI to contest in elections, emphasizing that their participation would reveal their actual support base. "It is a good thing. Let them participate. We want them to participate in the elections and their symbol on the voting machine. Then the truth will come out," Abdullah stated. He further urged the Union Home Minister to revoke the ban promptly, enabling JeI to demonstrate its political strength in the forthcoming assembly elections anticipated to occur around July-August.

Abdullah also mentioned past instances where JeI reportedly supported various candidates and parties, suggesting that direct participation would be more beneficial for the organization. "Let them field candidates and let them try their luck," he added, advocating for a more transparent and direct involvement of JeI in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ghulam Qadir Wani, speaking from Pulwama, confirmed ongoing discussions with the Centre regarding lifting the ban. Wani emphasized JeI's commitment to democracy and its desire to contribute positively to society through electoral participation. "We want to get our ban removed and we want to play our role in society. If the ban is removed, we may take part in the elections," Wani explained, highlighting the organization's historical engagement in democratic processes and its readiness to partake in future elections.

The stance of both Abdullah and Wani underscores a broader call for inclusivity and democratic engagement in Jammu and Kashmir's political processes. By advocating for the revocation of the ban on JeI, they are pushing for a political environment where different voices and perspectives can contribute to the region's democratic fabric.
