India's Olympic shooting star Manu Bhaker has suffered a personal tragedy as her maternal grandmother and maternal uncle lost their lives in a road accident on Sunday.

According to police reports, Bhaker's relatives were travelling on a two-wheeler when it collided with the car. The driver of the car fled the scene and remains unidentified.

ASI Suresh Kumar stated, "We received information about the accident involving a collision between a car and a scooter. Both individuals on the scooter died. We could not locate the driver of the car at the site."

This heartbreaking news comes just days after Bhaker, a double Olympic medallist, was honoured with the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

During the Paris Games in the summer of 2024, the 22-year-old achieved a historic milestone as the first athlete from independent India to win two medals in a single Olympic edition.

Bhaker opened India's medal tally by securing third place in the women's individual 10m air pistol event, becoming the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal.

A few days later, she partnered with Sarabjot Singh to claim bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, marking India's first-ever team medal in shooting.
