Old wounds haunting Kiran Bedi: Lawyers oppose BJP's CM candidate
New Delhi, Jan 21: With former top cop Kiran Bedi being projected as BJP Chief Ministerial candidate, there are many people including some party members who are allegedly opposing this decision of the party. But it is not only party people but also Delhi lawyers who are gearing up to oppose Bedi as BJP's choice for the top job.
The lawyers still hold a grudge for a clash between the Delhi Police and the lawyers 27 years ago.
As per a TOI report, "All Delhi Bar Association Coordination Committee opposed Bedi's nomination and urged fellow lawyers to ensure she doesn't become the CM. In other words, the committee asked lawyers not to vote for her, citing her past "track record" of ordering lathicharge against them in 1988 when she was DCP (north)."
"Her attitude towards lawyers has been negative. A commission of inquiry indicted her. She is notorious for her arrogant behavior towards the legal fraternity. Taking all these factors into account all the bar associations of Delhi district courts have unanimously passed the resolution to ensure she should not become the CM," RK Wadhwa, chairman of the committee was quoted as saying in the daily.
"We had organized 'lawyers for Modi and Modi for lawyers' campaigns. We still support the central BJP leadership but won't tolerate this lady, who has been against lawyers," Wadhwa added.
"We had supported the BJP and still support Modi but we will not support the person who attacked lawyers so brutally," Wadhwa further said in the daily.
In 1988, as the DCP of North Delhi, Kiran Bedi had ordered a lathicharge on lawyers in Tis Hazari, leading to strike in all district courts in the city.
Leaders of the All Delhi Bar Association Coordination Committee have also said that they would launch a campaign against Bedi if she did not apologise for her action 27 years ago.
