Odisha Train Accident Survivors Recount The Horror

Survivors of the triple train crash in Odisha's Balasore district have opened up on the horrific accident.

At least 50 people were killed and more than 350 injured in a horrific triple train crash on Friday in Odisha's Balasore district involving the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express and a goods train.

"I was asleep when the accident happened. I woke up after the train derailed. Reservations is like general compartment. 10-15 people fell on me," he told ANI.

The survivor claims that he injured his hand and neck after so many people fell on him.

"When I got out of the train, I saw limbs scattered all around; a leg here, a hand there. Someone's face was disfigured," said the survivor.

Three NDRF teams are currently working at the crash site in Balasore district while six more are being rushed to the spot, according to officials.

A passenger Rupam Banerjee told newspersons, "The local people really went out on a limb to help us ... not only helping pull out people but retrieve our luggage and get us water."

Some of the scenes at the site "were too gory to describe," said another passenger, who added that most people who were trapped by the accident have been rescued.

"After the train derailed, I escaped from the train and rescued 3-4 people," another survivor told the news agency. He said that there might have been 200 people in the bogie.

    Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

    Also, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased, Rs 2 lakh for those grievously injured and Rs 50,000 for those who got minor injuries.

    Although reports claim that 30 people have died, the Centre has confirmed two deaths by the time this story went for publishing.
