Odisha Train Accident: CBI Registers FIR, Takes Over Probe
In the latest development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case on Tuesday in connection with the three-train collision that took place in Balasore district, Odisha on Friday evening. The CBI registered the case based on a request from the Ministry of Railways, in conjunction with the consent of the Odisha Government. The incident involved the Coromandel Express, Yashwantpur-Howrah Express, and a goods train at Bahanaga Bazar in Odisha on June 2, 2023.

According to a CBI official, the investigation has been transferred from the Balasore GRPS in District Cuttack, Odisha to the CBI. A team from the CBI is already present in Balasore to conduct the investigation.
The Railway Board recommended a CBI inquiry into the Balasore train accident on Sunday. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that, considering the circumstances, situation, and information received from the administration, the Railway Board supports a CBI probe for further inquiry and investigation. Minister Vaishnaw faced criticism from opposition parties who demanded his resignation, citing various reports and audits that highlighted deficiencies within the Railways.
The collision near Bahanaga Bazar Railway station in Balasore, Odisha resulted in a tragic incident with a death toll of at least 278 people and over 1,000 injuries. The accident involved the derailment and collision of 21 coaches of the Coromandel Express, SMVP-Howrah Superfast Express, and a goods train.
