Odishas Tiger Triumph: Population Spikes to 30, Thanks to Conservation Success
Odishas tiger population has achieved a significant milestone, growing from 20 in 2022 to an impressive 30 in 2023. This remarkable feat is attributed to the unwavering dedication of the states forest department and their unwavering commitment to creating a thriving habitat for these majestic creatures.
In a significant development, Odisha's tiger population has witnessed a notable increase, rising from 20 to 30 in the past two years, as announced by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday. This encouraging news comes as a result of the state's dedicated conservation efforts and the creation of a hospitable habitat for these majestic creatures.

Similipal Tiger Reserve: A Thriving Sanctuary
The Similipal Tiger Reserve has emerged as a haven for tigers, now housing 27 of the state's total tiger population. This remarkable growth is a testament to the reserve's effective management and conservation practices. Additionally, three tigers were found in Hirakud Wildlife Division, Paralakhemundi Territorial Forest Division, and Greater Similipal Tiger Landscape, further expanding the tiger presence in Odisha.
Camera-Trapping Reveals Vital Data
During the All Odisha Tiger Estimation exercise, camera-trapping played a crucial role in capturing valuable data. A total of 27 adult tigers, comprising 14 females and 13 males, were successfully camera-trapped, providing insights into their population dynamics. Notably, evidence of three additional adult tigers was found in the Similipal tiger reserve, although they were not captured on camera.
Pseudo-Melanistic Tigers: A Unique Feature
Odisha's tiger population boasts a unique characteristic – the presence of pseudo-melanistic tigers. These tigers appear black due to their prominent black stripes, distinguishing them from other Royal Bengal Tigers. Similipal holds the distinction of being the only wild habitat in the world where such pseudo-melanistic tigers are found. Moreover, 13 adult tigers in Similipal, including seven females and six males, were identified as pseudo-melanistic, adding to the reserve's significance.
Cubs Spotted in Similipal
Encouragingly, camera traps also captured images of cubs in Similipal, indicating successful breeding and population growth. These cubs were not included in the tiger headcount as they were less than one year old. The headcount was meticulously conducted between October 15, 2023, and February 10, 2024, reflecting the state's commitment to monitoring and conserving its tiger population.
Commendation for Forest Department
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his appreciation for the forest department's unwavering efforts in creating a conducive habitat for tigers to thrive. Their dedication and expertise have been instrumental in achieving this remarkable increase in the tiger population. Odisha's success story serves as an inspiration for other states to prioritize tiger conservation and ensure the preservation of these magnificent creatures.
Conclusion
Odisha's remarkable achievement in tiger conservation showcases the positive impact of sustained efforts and effective management practices. With the tiger population rising from 20 to 30 in just two years, the state has set an exemplary standard for wildlife conservation. The presence of pseudo-melanistic tigers and the successful breeding of cubs further adds to the significance of Odisha's tiger habitats. As the state continues on its path of conservation, it can serve as a beacon of hope for tiger preservation not only in India but also globally.
