Odisha Government Announces New Cybercrime Wing to Combat Rising Digital Fraud and Enhance Investigations

The Odisha government is planning to establish a new cybercrime division within the state police to tackle modern challenges, as announced by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. During the closing session of the 69th Police Duty Meet, he highlighted the rise in cyber fraud, digital arrests, and investment scams. The government aims to enhance and update the police department's cyber cell.

Odisha Police Launches New Cybercrime Wing

Majhi emphasised the need for cyber police stations in every district. Additionally, a dedicated cybercrime branch will be formed for advanced investigation and oversight of cyber offences, led by a senior officer. This initiative is part of the government's strategy to address increasing cyber threats effectively.

Focus on Women's Safety

Majhi expressed concern about low conviction rates in crimes against women, attributing it to inadequate investigations and past political indifference. He stressed that the state's conviction rate should match the national average. To achieve this, more women's courts are being established, with four districts already identified for this initiative.

The Chief Minister stated that the police would now conduct investigations professionally and scientifically to provide undeniable evidence. He reiterated the government's zero-tolerance policy towards violence against women, aiming to improve safety and justice for women across the state.

Police Modernisation Efforts

At the event, Majhi inaugurated new police stations in Astaranga, Balanga, and Delang within Puri district. He underscored the importance of modernising the police force, reforming systems, enhancing investigative infrastructure, and training personnel. He noted that a well-prepared police force is crucial for effectively apprehending and prosecuting criminals.

The state government plans to fill approximately 5,000 vacancies to boost police efficiency. Majhi also assured that all police stations would receive an adequate number of vehicles for effective policing operations.

Addressing Criminal Activities

Majhi praised recent successful case resolutions by the police and urged them to focus on individuals attempting to disrupt society deliberately. He made it clear that previous protections offered to such criminals would no longer be available. "Take strict action against them," Majhi instructed senior officers present at the gathering.

The Chief Minister's announcements reflect a comprehensive approach to enhancing law enforcement capabilities in Odisha. By addressing both technological advancements and social issues like women's safety, the government aims to create a safer environment for all residents.
