Odisha Court Sentences Man to Death for Rape-Murder of Eight-Year-Old Girl in 2022 Incident
A court in Odisha's Sambalpur district sentenced a man to death for the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in 2022. The POCSO court judge, Abhilash Senapati, found Prasanta Baghar guilty, as confirmed by special prosecutor Santosh Panda. The crime occurred on March 25, 2022, when the girl was taken from a field in her village.

According to the prosecution, Prasanta Baghar abducted the child while she was in a field and committed the crime. Afterward, he used an axe to behead her and returned to the village carrying her severed head. This gruesome act led to a confrontation with his wife, resulting in a scuffle between them.
Legal Proceedings and Conviction
The police were alerted and promptly arrested Prasanta Baghar at the scene. The girl's father filed a complaint, initiating an investigation into the incident. During the trial, 25 witnesses were examined by the court, which ultimately found Prasanta guilty of all charges brought against him.
In light of the evidence and circumstances, the court sentenced Prasanta Baghar to death and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Special prosecutor Santosh Panda stated that a comprehensive 50-page charge sheet was submitted for this case.
