Odisha Evacuates Over 3 Lakh Residents as Cyclone Dana Approaches Coastal Regions

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that over 30% of the planned evacuation of 10 lakh people had been completed by Wednesday evening. This was in anticipation of Cyclone Dana, which is approaching the state's coastal areas and could affect nearly half the population. The cyclone is expected to cross the Odisha coast near Bhitarkanika and Dhamra early on Friday.

Odisha Evacuates Residents for Cyclone Dana

Majhi stated that three districts are expected to be severely impacted by the cyclone. "Steps are being taken to evacuate people from danger zones...So far, 30 per cent of the targeted 10 lakh people have been evacuated...the remaining will be taken to safety by 11 am on Thursday," he said. The government initially aimed to evacuate 10,60,336 individuals from 14 districts, but the focus has shifted to the coastal regions likely to be hit.

Government's Preparedness and Safety Measures

The chief minister assured that the state government is fully equipped to handle the cyclone's impact. He urged residents to stay calm and assured them of their safety. "The government is fully prepared to tackle the situation. You are in safe hands," Majhi conveyed through media channels. Evacuated individuals are receiving dry and cooked meals, with all necessary arrangements made at cyclone shelters.

Majhi has assigned ministers and experienced officers to various districts for effective cyclone management. The districts of Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, and Puri are expected to experience the most severe effects of Cyclone Dana. However, if the cyclone's path changes, other districts may also be affected, and the government is prepared for such scenarios.

Monitoring and Emergency Response

The chief minister visited the emergency control room of the Special Relief Commissioner. During his visit, he was briefed on satellite data and emergency communication systems in place for managing the cyclone situation. This ensures that all necessary information is available for making informed decisions during this critical period.

The government's focus remains on ensuring the safety of those in vulnerable areas along the coast. Officials continue to monitor developments closely and adjust plans as needed to protect lives and property from Cyclone Dana's potential impact.
