Odisha: Allegations of Sexual Harassment by Police Following Army Officer's Arrest
A woman, a friend of an Army officer, alleged sexual harassment after being detained by police in Bhubaneswar. She was arrested on Sunday night by Bharatpur police but later released on bail granted by the high court. The incident occurred when she and the officer were returning home around 1 am after closing her restaurant. They sought help at the Bharatpur police station following alleged misbehaviour by some young men.

At the police station, the woman claimed that a female constable in civilian clothes verbally abused her instead of assisting. She had approached the constable to file an FIR and request a patrol vehicle to apprehend the miscreants. The woman is currently receiving treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar. She recounted that more officers arrived later and asked her friend to write a complaint, but he was unexpectedly placed in custody.
Allegations of Police Misconduct
The woman protested against the unlawful detention of the Army officer, which led to two female officers allegedly assaulting her physically. In self-defence, she bit one officer's hand when they tried to restrain her by the neck. Subsequently, she was tied up and confined in a room, according to her account. She further alleged that a male officer entered the room, kicked her multiple times, and behaved indecently.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident. They have requested an action taken report from the Director General of Police (DGP) within three days. "Urgent disciplinary action is expected," stated NCW on X. Meanwhile, a case has been registered at Chandaka police station against unidentified individuals who allegedly misbehaved with the Army officer and his friend.
The woman described how the male officer lowered both their pants and exposed himself, asking how long she intended to remain silent. Her allegations have prompted widespread concern and calls for accountability from law enforcement authorities.
The situation highlights serious allegations of misconduct within the police force, raising questions about the treatment of individuals in custody. The NCW's involvement underscores the gravity of these claims and the need for a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
