Not just post-doctoral student, another woman committed suicide in IIT Madras

Chennai, July 14: As news of the suicide of P Maheshwari echoed, another such incident shattered the peace in the campus proximity. The wife of an assistant professor in Physics here too was found hanging. Both she and her husband Ganesan resided at the Warden quarters inside the campus.

Police investigations are being conducted in both the cases. P Maheshwari, a 34-year old student was residing at room number 814 of Sabarmathi hostel and was pursuing her post doctoral fellowship course in Chemistry. She was found hanging in her room around 5 pm by her hostel mates. A native of Puducherry, Maheshwari is married with a six-year old son.

IIT-Madras

Police cited family problems as the reason behind both the suicides. Kotturpuram Police registered a case of suspicious death under Section 174 of the CrPC. The bodies were moved to the Government Royapettah Hospital for autopsy.

Meanwhile, the institute expressed deep sadness over the death of the PhD scholar. A statement issued by IIT Madras said, "The scholar's family has been informed. The Institute is taking necessary action and is extending full cooperation to the civil authorities. The Institute extends its deep felt condolences to the family and the near and dear ones of the scholar for the unfortunate, untimely and devastating loss."
