'Not Body-Shaming’: Congress Leader Backtracks On Rohit Sharma Remark, Deletes Post

Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohamed deleted her controversial post on X (formerly Twitter) after facing backlash for calling Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma "overweight" and "unimpressive."

Following criticism from the BJP, Shama defended her remarks, stating they were made in a "generic manner" and not intended as body-shaming. "I always believed a sportsperson should be fit. I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have the right to express my opinion in a democracy," she told ANI.

Her comments came after Sharma scored 15 runs off 17 balls during India's ICC Champions Trophy match against New Zealand. Despite India's 44-run victory, Shama criticized the team captain's fitness, calling him "fat" and the "most unimpressive captain India has ever had." In another post, she questioned, "What is so world-class about him compared to his predecessors? He is a mediocre captain and player who got lucky to lead India."

BJP's Sharp Response

The BJP quickly hit back, with spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla mocking Congress's electoral record: "Those who have lost 90 elections under Rahul Gandhi's captaincy are calling Rohit Sharma unimpressive!" He added, "Six ducks in Delhi and 90 election losses are impressive, but winning the T20 World Cup isn't?"

BJP leader Radhika Khera also slammed Congress, accusing the party of disrespecting athletes. "The same Congress that humiliated athletes for decades now dares to mock a cricketing legend? Rohit Sharma is a World Cup-winning captain, while your leader, RahulGandhi, can't even captain his own party without crashing it into the ground!"

With political tempers flaring, the controversy over Shama Mohamed's remarks continues to spark heated debate online
