Noida Power Cuts: Surge In Demand Causes Widespread Outages In Noida And Greater Noida
Noida: Residents of Noida and Greater Noida are enduring prolonged power cuts, intensifying their summer difficulties, with complaints accumulating across multiple sectors. It has also disrupted the operations in offices across the city which would impact the productivity and creating a challenging work environment.
The issue has been linked to an increased power demand in the region, which, according to officials from Pashchimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PVVNL), reached a peak of 1,310 MW on May 22.

Prolonged Power Cuts Exacerbate Summer Woes in Noida
A steady rise in power demand has been reported by the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) since June 1, with peaks hitting 30,648 MW on June 17, which is a significant increase from the previous year's peak of 28,284 MW recorded in July, as reported by Times Now.
It was highlighted by PVVNL officials that Noida experienced its highest demands in recent years, with peaks at 1,547 MW in July 2023. This situation has underscored the strain on the local power infrastructure, as reported by the Hindustan Times. Rajiv Mohan, the chief engineer of PVVNL Noida, indicated that a potential further increase in demand is anticipated in July as humidity and heat typically escalate electricity usage.
It was noted that while the infrastructure is under pressure, efforts are being made to manage the situation effectively. In Greater Noida, the highest demand faced by the Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) was 775 MW on June 18. Officials assured that adequate arrangements have been made to meet peak requirements, as reported by Times Now.
Despite this, residents in sectors like 50, 55, 56, 71, 104, 117, and 122 are continuing to experience interruptions lasting several hours, leading to frustration among the locals. The outages were attributed by officials to local faults, which have been exacerbated by high temperatures, causing the supply network to overheat.
Peak Power Demand In Delhi
Persistent heat waves have driven the national capital's peak power demand to 8,647 MW on June 19, the highest ever recorded for the city, as stated by discom officials, as reported Hindustan Times. The previous highest peak power demand in Delhi was recorded at 8,302 megawatts (MW) on May 29 this year. For the first time, Delhi's peak power demand reached 8,000 MW on May 22, 2024, according to reports.
The extreme heatwave conditions have pushed the city's power demand upwards, soaring to 8,647 MW at 3:22 pm on Tuesday, according to the State Load Dispatch Centre, Delhi. Since May 22, Delhi's peak power demand has exceeded 8,000 MW on eight occasions so far, as noted by discom officials.
