No More 'Stray', Call Them 'Destitute': Rajasthan's New Label For Abandoned Cows
The Rajasthan government has announced that cows and other bovines will no longer be referred to as 'stray', deeming the term 'insulting' and 'inappropriate'.
Instead, words like 'helpless' or 'destitute' are encouraged to describe bovines roaming independently, as per a recent order.

In July, state minister Joraram Kumawat stated that cows in Rajasthan would no longer be called 'stray' but referred to as 'nirashit' (destitute), as reported by PTI.
Kumawat, the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister, noted that the BJP government is focused on protecting and promoting cows and bulls.
He added that a Chief Minister Animal Husbandry Development Fund, with an allocation of Rs 250 crore, will be established to support cow welfare.
During a debate on the Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department's grant request in the Rajasthan Assembly, Kumawat highlighted the government's commitment to helping cattle rearers become economically self-sufficient by "developing valuable animal wealth and increasing livestock production."
He added, "The state government is also working sensitively for the protection and promotion of cows and bulls."
Following the discussion, the Assembly approved the department's grant requests by voice vote. Kumawat further announced the upcoming Chief Minister Animal Husbandry Development Fund, earmarked at Rs 250 crore.
In addition, the Mukhyamantri Mangala Pashu Bima Yojana will be launched, covering dairy animals and other livestock, with plans for phased animal fairs across districts to benefit livestock farmers.
The Opposition Congress previously accused BJP government of merely offering 'lip service' to the welfare of cows in Rajasthan without taking meaningful action.
