Is Railways Planning To Give Free Train Tickets For Mahakumbh Pilgrims? Here's The Truth

The Indian Railways has dismissed reports claiming it plans to offer free train travel for pilgrims attending the Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. In a statement released on Wednesday, December 18, the Ministry of Railways categorically labeled such claims as "entirely baseless and misleading."

The clarification comes amid widespread speculation that passengers traveling short distances (200-250 km) from Prayagraj after attending the Kumbh Mela might be allowed to travel without tickets. Some reports also suggested that passengers traveling longer distances would be permitted to buy tickets onboard from ticket examiners without penalties due to overcrowding.

Free Train Tickets For Mahakumbh Travellers

"There are no provisions for free travel during the Mahakumbh Mela or any other occasion," the ministry asserted. It also emphasized that traveling without a valid ticket is strictly prohibited under Indian Railways regulations and constitutes a punishable offense.

Clarification from the Railways

In a statement released on Wednesday, December 18, the Railways clarified:

  • No Free Travel: Reports suggesting free train travel for pilgrims during the Mahakumbh are unfounded.
  • Ticket Validity: Traveling without a valid ticket remains strictly prohibited and is punishable under Indian Railways regulations.
  • Commitment to Services: Indian Railways is committed to ensuring smooth travel for all passengers and has no plans to waive ticket requirements.

The Mahakumbh, a 45-day spiritual event scheduled from January 13 to February 26, 2025, is expected to draw millions of devotees from across the country. To handle the anticipated influx, the Uttar Pradesh government has allocated ₹5,000 crore for the event, while Indian Railways has announced comprehensive arrangements to ensure smooth travel.

Preparations for Mahakumbh 2025

The Mahakumbh, scheduled from January 13 to February 26, 2025, is expected to attract millions of pilgrims. To accommodate the daily influx of nearly 5 lakh passengers:

Special Trains: 3,000 special trains will operate to manage the surge.
Infrastructure Upgrades: Measures include additional ticket counters, holding areas, and other passenger amenities.

Approximately 3,000 special trains will operate during the Mahakumbh to cater to the movement of nearly 5 lakh passengers daily in general coaches. The Railways is also setting up special holding areas, additional ticket counters, and other necessary facilities to manage the massive crowd.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to providing seamless travel for all attendees but stressed that all passengers must carry valid tickets. It urged the public to disregard any misleading information suggesting otherwise.

The Mahakumbh 2025 promises to be a significant logistical challenge for Indian Railways, but officials remain confident in their preparations to meet the demands of this monumental event.
