No country for women? Pervert blackmails Udaipur teen, police indulge in victim-shaming
In a Facebook post, the teen's sister asked why the police indulged in victim-shaming. Union Minister Maneka Gandhi has now assured of action.
All that a 17-year-old girl from Udaipur and her father wanted was to file a complaint against a pervert but instead of support from the police department, the duo got a lecture on how the girl should delete all her social media accounts. The entire incident was narrated by the 17-year-old's elder sister on Facebook. The post has now gone viral with union minister Maneka Gandhi taking note.

Dear @Salehapw1, quickly forward your contact number through DM. I will take immediate action. https://t.co/EoHgUuNG5L

A freelance journalist posted the brazen victim-shaming that Udaipur police indulged in instead of following the rule book and registering a complaint. The Facebook post says that an anonymous pervert sent a morphed nude picture of the minor and blackmailed her. Terrified, the girl narrated her ordeal to her parents who insisted that a complaint be filed.
The teen and her father, the post says, approached the Dhanmandi police station in Udaipur to lodge a complaint. The duo was turned away with the police claiming that the complaint involved cyber crime and needed to be filed with the cyber crime cell. The father-daughter duo then approached the Suraj Pole police whose cyber crime branch cell filed a FIR.
Little did the duo know that instead of an acknowledgement for the FIR, the Dhanmandi police would give them a moral lecture. "Bohras have given their children a lot of freedom and that is why this happens. Why do you post pictures on social media? Whatever he has done with you, he will do it with others as well. You should delete your social media accounts in order to be safe", the post quotes the circle inspector as saying.
The journalist who posted about the incident claimed that apart from victim-shaming the police also tried to influence their father to stop the teen from using cellphones and social media accounts. "She is 17 and has the privilege of education and liberal parents. This kind of brainwashing can take these away from her. More than disappointed, I am angry that, whatever happens, we end up paying the price of our freedom," the teen's sister said in a post.
