No action against those holding demonetised currency, Centre assures SC
The petitioners argued that the government had closed the window to deposit old currency earlier than it had assured.
The government has assured that no criminal action would be taken against those who are holding demonetised currency of Rs 500 and 1,000. The government said it would not act against such persons until the Supreme Court finally disposes off the matter.

The court was hearing a petition which sought a directive to the government to let people deposit demonetised currency in banks. The court however asked the petitioners to file an intervention application before the Constitution Bench of the court which is hearing the main matter on demonetisation.
The petitioners argued that the government had closed the window to deposit old currency earlier than it had assured. This caused a great deal of hardship to many, especially the farmers, those in hospitals and abroad.
The government while assuring the court that no action would taken until the disposal of the petition also said that in the presence of an existing law that bars exchanging old currency no exception could be made for now.
