Nitish Kumar Intensifies Demand For Special Package For Bihar

Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the Janata Dal (United), has ramped up calls for a special package the state ahead of the union budget for FY 2024-25. The aim is to transform Bihar into a developed state within five years.

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary recently met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi They discussed strategies to accelerate Bihar's growth. Choudhary, who also oversees the finance department, highlighted the need for funds to boost the state's development.

Support from the Centre

Senior BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha expressed optimism about receiving full support from the Centre. "We are hopeful of getting full support from the Centre on development issues," he stated to the media.

The JD(U)'s backing of Narendra Modi's government is crucial for its stability. Political analyst Pramod Kumar noted that Nitish Kumar aims to secure maximum financial assistance from the Centre to implement various schemes before next year's state assembly elections.

Potential Impact on Relations

The Centre is anticipated to offer significant support in the upcoming union budget. However, if substantial aid is not provided, it could strain relations between BJP and JD(U), according to Kumar.

In a national executive meeting on June 29, JD(U) passed a resolution advocating for Bihar's high growth trajectory if granted special category status. This move was met with criticism from RJD, which accused JD(U) of lowering its demands from special status to a special package.

Political Dynamics

Newly appointed JD(U) General Secretary Manish Verma reiterated his party's commitment to persuading the Centre for special status. He emphasized that this status would significantly benefit Bihar's development efforts.

The discussions between Choudhary and Sitharaman also covered other critical issues related to Bihar's rapid growth. These talks are part of ongoing efforts by Bihar's leadership to secure necessary resources and support from the central government.

Nitish Kumar's administration remains focused on leveraging any potential financial packages to fast-track people-oriented schemes. The goal is clear: ensure substantial progress before voters head to the polls next year.

The outcome of these pre-budget discussions will be closely watched as they hold significant implications for Bihar’s future development and political landscape.
