Modi 3.0: Nitish Kumar, Chirag Paswan Eye Railways Ministry, Other Key NDA Cabinet Positions
The Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) is strategising to leverage its 12 seats in the latest elections to secure key portfolios in the NDA cabinet. This includes the much sought-after Railways ministry. Positioned as a significant force within the NDA alliance, JD(U) aims to strengthen its influence and presence in the cabinet.
According to reports, JD(U) has outlined several demands during central cabinet negotiations. They are requesting three ministerial posts alongside a special package. Additionally, they aim to lead the 2025 assembly elections under Nitish Kumar’s leadership.

JD(U) is focused on acquiring the Ministry of Railways and two other crucial departments. However, a standoff has emerged with Chirag Paswan, as both parties vie for the Railways ministry. Paswan is also seeking two ministerial posts for himself and a significant role in Bihar.
Moreover, JD(U) may push for a nationwide caste census. Jitan Ram Manjhi has also expressed interest in a ministerial position. Speculation suggests that only one or two BJP MPs from Bihar might secure ministerial berths under the new arrangement.
This move marks a shift from the 2019 scenario, where JD(U) won 16 seats but received only one ministerial position due to BJP's majority. The current 12 seats hold greater bargaining power, giving JD(U) a stronger position in negotiations.
JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar emphasized their commitment to the NDA and their anticipation for Narendra Modi's third consecutive term as Prime Minister. He clarified that Nitish Kumar’s recent flight with Tejashwi Yadav was a mere coincidence.
As JD(U) eyes portfolios like Railways, Rural Development, and Jal Shakti, they also show potential interest in Transport and Agriculture ministries. This strategic approach aims to ensure JD(U)'s pivotal role in the central cabinet.
The ongoing negotiations and strategic demands highlight JD(U)'s intent to enhance its influence within the NDA alliance. With potential shifts in ministerial positions, the political landscape in Bihar and at the central level could see significant changes.
As the discussions progress, the outcomes will determine the extent of JD(U)'s influence and its role in shaping future policies and governance under the NDA leadership.
