Nitin Gadkari Turns Down Support for Prime Minister Role, Cites Conviction
Union minister Nitin Gadkari revealed on Saturday that a political leader once offered to back him for the Prime Minister's position. However, he declined the offer, stating he had no such ambition. "I remember one incident -- I would not name anyone -- that person said 'if you are going to become prime minister, we will support you,'" Gadkari shared at a journalism awards function, without specifying the timing of the conversation.

Gadkari's Commitment to Conviction
Gadkari questioned the need for support and emphasised his lack of desire for the Prime Minister's role. "But, I asked why you should support me, and why should I take your support. To become the prime minister is not the aim in my life. I am loyal to my conviction and my organisation, and I am not going to compromise for any post because my conviction is foremost for me," he stated.
During his speech, Gadkari highlighted the significance of ethics in both journalism and politics. He recounted a discussion with a senior CPI member where he praised late A B Bardhan as one of Nagpur and Vidarbha's most prominent politicians. The CPI leader was surprised since Bardhan opposed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Respecting Honest Opposition
Gadkari stressed that honest opposition should be respected. "I said one should respect a person who opposes with honesty, because there is honesty in his opposition....one who opposes with dishonesty deserves no respect," he remarked. He noted that Comrade Bardhan was true to his ideology, lamenting that such integrity is now rare in both politics and journalism.
The senior BJP leader also mentioned that democracy thrives only when its four pillars—judiciary, executive, legislature, and media—adhere to ethical standards. This adherence ensures the successful functioning of democratic systems.
In conclusion, Gadkari's reflections underscore his dedication to personal conviction over political ambition and highlight the crucial role of ethics in sustaining democracy.
