Sitharaman's husband, Parakala Prabhakar, is a respected economist and political commentator. Born on January 2, 1959, in Narsapuram, Andhra Pradesh, he comes from a politically active family.

His mother, Parakala Kalikamba, and father, Parakala Seshavatharam, were both legislators in Andhra Pradesh, with his father serving in multiple state cabinets during the 1970s and early 1980s.

Prabhakar completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at Andhra Loyola College in Vijayawada and went on to earn his M.A. and M.Phil. from JNU. He later studied at the London School of Economics and received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of London in 1991.

He has also served as a communication advisor to the Andhra Pradesh government and hosted current affairs programmes on Telugu television channels.
