Nine Labourers Trapped in Flooded Coal Mine in Assam's Dima Hasao District Amid Rescue Efforts

A sudden influx of water trapped nine workers inside a coal mine in Assam's Dima Hasao district on Monday, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The incident occurred at the Assam Coal Quarry in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso. The exact number of workers inside remains unconfirmed, but quarry employees estimate around 15 were present.

Labourers Trapped in Assam Coal Mine Flood

Chief Minister Sarma shared the names of the trapped individuals on X: Ganga Bahadur Shreth, Hussain Ali, Jakir Hussain, Sarpa Barman, Mustafa Seikh, Khushi Mohan Rai, Sanjit Sarkar, Lijan Magar, and Sarat Goyary. Earlier, Sarma expressed concern over the situation in Umrangshu, noting that the precise number and condition of those trapped were still unclear. He mentioned that the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Superintendent of Police (SP), and state minister Kaushik Rai were heading to the site.

Rescue Efforts Underway

The army's help has been requested for the rescue mission, as stated by Sarma. Both the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are en route to assist at the scene. Dima Hasao SP Mayank Jha informed reporters that several workers are feared trapped due to unexpected flooding that prevented their escape.

Rescue operations commenced promptly with local authorities, emergency responders, and mining experts collaborating to locate and rescue the trapped workers. Eyewitnesses and initial evaluations indicate that the flooding happened suddenly, catching the workers off guard.

Kaushik Rai, who is responsible for mines and minerals in the state, is actively involved in coordinating efforts at the site. The situation remains critical as teams work tirelessly to ensure the safety of those trapped underground.

The incident highlights ongoing safety challenges in mining operations within the region. Authorities are focused on rescuing those affected while also investigating how such an incident could occur without warning.
