Newly Elected 89 % MLAs In Jharkhand Are Crorepatis: Study

In a recent study conducted by the Jharkhand Election Watch and the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), it has been revealed that the wealth of the newly elected members of the Jharkhand legislative assembly has seen a significant increase. This analysis, which covered 80 out of the 81 victorious candidates, unveiled that 71 of these MLAs boast net worths that categorize them as crorepatis, marking a 20 percent increase from the previous assembly where 56 MLAs were in this financial bracket. The surge in wealthy MLAs underscores an upward trend in the financial stature of those representing Jharkhand's populace.

The financial landscape of Jharkhand's political arena has experienced notable changes, with the average assets of the winning candidates in the 2024 elections reaching ₹6.90 crore. This figure represents a substantial rise from the ₹3.87 crore average asset value recorded in 2019. Among the elected MLAs, the report identified Rameshwar Oraon from the Congress party as the wealthiest, with assets amounting to ₹42.20 crore. Following him is Kushwaha Shashi Bhushan Mehta, with assets worth ₹32.15 crore, and Sanjay Prasad Yadav from the RJD, who declared assets totaling ₹29.59 crore.

The distribution of wealth among the different political parties is equally noteworthy. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leads with 28 crorepati MLAs, followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with 20, and the Congress with 14. Other parties such as the RJD, CPI(ML) Liberation, LJP (Ram Vilas), JD(U), and AJSU Party also have representation among these affluent legislators. This diversity indicates a widespread phenomenon of wealth among the elected officials across the political spectrum in Jharkhand.

Despite the high financial standing of many MLAs, the report also highlighted the presence of liabilities, with 14 new MLAs reporting debts of ₹1 crore or more. This aspect introduces a dimension of financial complexity to the otherwise affluent profiles of these legislators. Furthermore, the study shed light on the educational background of the winners, revealing that 28 of them have education levels ranging from Class 8 to 12 pass, while 50 are graduates or hold higher degrees. This educational distribution among the MLAs provides insight into the varied qualifications of those governing the state.

Jharkhand's legislative assembly now includes 12 women, an increase from the 10 in the previous term, indicating a gradual shift towards gender inclusivity in the state's political realm. However, on the other end of the wealth spectrum, Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha's (JLKM) Jairam Kumar Mahato, who won the Dumri seat, declared the lowest assets, amounting to approximately ₹2.55 lakh. This stark contrast within the assembly highlights the diverse economic backgrounds of its members.

The growth in the average assets of the MLAs over the past five years, averaging an increase of ₹2.71 crore, suggests a trend of accumulating wealth among the political class in Jharkhand. As the state moves forward with its newly elected assembly, the financial profiles and backgrounds of its legislators will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping their governance and policy-making priorities.
