Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Approves New Train Service from Tambaram to Rameswaram

A new train service from Tambaram to Rameswaram, passing through Chidambaram, Thiruvarur, and Thiruthirapoondi, has been approved by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai announced this development on Thursday. The train is set to commence operations on 6th April 2025, coinciding with the inauguration of the first vertical lift Pamban Bridge by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

New Train Service from Tambaram to Rameswaram

Annamalai had previously requested the introduction of this train service to address the needs of residents in Thiruvarur and Thiruthirapoondi. In a letter dated March 24, he highlighted that the current trains from Chennai to Rameswaram do not stop at these stations. The existing services, RMM SF Express (train no. 22661) and MS RMM Express (train no. 16751), operate from Egmore Chennai but bypass these towns.

New Train Service for Improved Connectivity

The decision to introduce this new train was influenced by feedback from local residents and representations made by the BJP in Tamil Nadu. Annamalai expressed gratitude for the approval, noting that it would significantly benefit travellers from Thiruvarur district. The new route aims to provide better connectivity for those travelling between Chennai and Rameswaram.

In his communication with Vaishnaw, Annamalai emphasised the importance of addressing the travel needs of people in Thiruvarur. He urged the minister to consider their request for a direct train service from Tambaram to Mandapam via Thiruvarur and Thiruthirapoondi. This initiative is expected to ease travel for residents who currently lack direct rail access to Chennai and Rameswaram.

Enhancements in Tamil Nadu's Railway Infrastructure

Annamalai also acknowledged Vaishnaw's efforts in improving railway infrastructure across Tamil Nadu. He praised the allocation of funds for new railway lines, additional trains, track doubling, multitracking, and electrification projects. These developments have enhanced connectivity and improved travel experiences for millions of passengers in the state.

Representations from Thiruvarur residents highlighted their dissatisfaction with the absence of a direct train service to both Chennai and Rameswaram. They requested a new service from Tambaram to Mandapam via their town to alleviate travel challenges. Annamalai conveyed these concerns in his letter, urging prompt action to introduce the proposed train route.

The introduction of this new train service marks a significant step towards addressing regional connectivity issues. By including stops at Thiruvarur and Thiruthirapoondi, it aims to provide more convenient travel options for local residents. This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to enhance transportation infrastructure in Tamil Nadu.
