New Traffic Rules: Mandatory Helmets For Both Riders And Pillion Passengers In This City, Starting September 1
Starting September 1, 2024 a new traffic rule will be enforced in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, requiring both the rider and the pillion passenger on two-wheelers to wear helmets at all times. This rule, mandated by the Motor Vehicle Act, aims to address the rising number of road accidents in the city.
Why the New Rule?

The decision follows a directive from the High Court, responding to the increasing number of road incidents in Visakhapatnam. According to Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi and District Collector Harendheera Prasad, the rule is designed to enhance road safety and reduce the severity of injuries in case of accidents.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
From September 1, if either the rider or the pillion passenger is caught not wearing a helmet, they will face a fine of Rs 1035. Additionally, those found violating the helmet rule could have their licenses suspended for three months. The authorities have also emphasized that only ISI-marked helmets will be acceptable; substandard helmets will result in further action.
Importance of Wearing Helmets
Wearing a helmet is crucial not just to avoid fines, but to ensure personal safety. Helmets protect against severe head injuries, which can be fatal in the event of an accident. Helmets significantly reduce the risk of serious injury and death, making them an essential safety measure for all two-wheeler riders and passengers.
This new rule reflects a growing emphasis on road safety and aims to set a precedent for better adherence to traffic laws. Residents of Visakhapatnam are urged to comply with the new regulations to avoid penalties and, more importantly, to ensure their safety and that of their passengers.
