New Aadhaar Card ! UIDAI To Redesign Aadhaar Cards; Only Photo and QR Code to Appear

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing significant updates to the Aadhaar card to curb misuse. Reports indicate that the revamped card will show only the cardholder's photo and a QR code, reducing the risk of sensitive personal information being exposed via photocopies. Preparations for this change have reportedly been underway since 2025.

New Aadhaar App Brings Enhanced Features

UIDAI recently launched the full version of its Aadhaar app, allowing users to manage essential services without visiting an Aadhaar centre. Cardholders can now update their mobile numbers, addresses, and other personal details, as well as lock or unlock biometrics with a single click.

Why the Change Is Needed

Currently, photocopies of Aadhaar cards are widely submitted for services like banking, SIM registration, and government schemes. These copies reveal critical information such as Aadhaar number, name, address, and date of birth, making them vulnerable to misuse. The proposed redesign would allow the Aadhaar card to function as a secure photo ID, while verification occurs via scanning the QR code.

QR Code Verification for Enhanced Security

Under the proposed system, scanning the QR code would enable access to services like banking, SIM issuance, and government benefits without revealing full personal details. The new Aadhaar app already supports this feature, showing only the cardholder's photo and QR code, while other data remains hidden until login.

UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar confirmed that rules are being developed to strengthen Aadhaar security and reduce fraudulent use of photocopies. Though the proposal surfaced in December 2025, official implementation is still pending.
