Flood Alert: NDRF team arrives in Tamil Nadu

Tirunelveli, Dec 13: A team of National Disaster Response Force and army personnel have been deployed in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts in view of the flood alert for more torrential rains in the two districts for tonight and tomorrow.

With all the water bodies including the 11 dams full in the two districts, the officials did not want to take any chance in case there was rain. The entire inflow in the Papanasam dam and Manimutharu dam was being let into the Tamirabharani channel which already carrying water to its full capacity.

Apart from the strong contingent of 110 NDRF personnel who arrived yesterday, another group had arrived at Kayalpattinam in Tuticorin, police said.

P Vairavanathan an official of the NDRF said 110 personnel had come to tuticorin,and they would be deployed in three groups at Srivaikuntam and athur.

He said each team had been provided with five boats each. Besides equipments had been provided to search even in deep waters. Meanwhile the Tuticorin district collector Ravikumar held emergency meeting with the officials to discuss relief and rescue operations.

The NDRF and Army personnel were briefed about the areas that could badly affected in case of floods. The officials also inspected some of the catchment areas and the direction by which water was flowing, analysing the possibility of diverting the flood waters.
