NDMC to Refurbish Road Signages with CRRI's Technical Support
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has sanctioned the refurbishment of all road signages within its jurisdiction. This decision includes an agreement with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) for technical guidance on road maintenance. NDMC Vice-Chairman Satish Upadhyay stated that numerous infrastructure-related proposals were approved during a council meeting.

Plastic Waste Management Bye-laws
The NDMC has also approved the New Delhi Municipal Council Plastic Waste Management Bye-laws 2024 for gazette notification. The draft bye-laws were posted on the NDMC website on March 14 to invite public comments via email. After a 30-day notice period, no relevant feedback was received.
The road signages installed by the NDMC in 2009-2010 adhered to IRC 67:2001, which is now outdated according to the latest IRC norms issued in 2022. Upadhyay explained that the new IRC 67:2022 categorises signages differently for urban areas and highways or expressways. These signages vary by colour, letter fonts, size, and type of reflective sheets based on visibility and traffic speed.
Signage Replacement Costs
Currently, there are 6,439 existing signages in the NDMC area, with an additional 80 needed for schools and other locations. The total cost to replace all existing signages and install new ones is estimated at Rs 18.07 crore. Upadhyay mentioned that a third party will be engaged for this project during its execution.
During the meeting, the council also approved signing a Memorandum of Agreement between NDMC and CRRI. This agreement involves providing maintenance and rehabilitation measures for NDMC roads based on visual condition surveys and road roughness measurements.
Road Reconstruction Projects
NDMC Member Kuljeet Singh Chahal announced that the civic body has approved the reconstruction of 39 roads at an estimated cost of Rs 4.96 crore. Roads to be reconstructed include Sudhir Tyagi Marg, Road A block Palika Bhawan to Ringh Road, DCAC Road Leela to DCAC Sudhir Sabharwal Marg, Guru Gobind Singh Marg, Rajmata Singhia Marg, among others.
Chahal added that NDMC staff would receive training to use better design and technology for roads in NDMC areas. For this purpose, the NDMC plans to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CRRI.
Street Light Improvement Project
The council also approved a project aimed at improving street lights. The NDMC has sanctioned the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of 8,000 energy-efficient LED street light fittings. These will be individually controlled and monitored and integrated with the Command and Control Centre.
Chahal shared that there was a discussion about redeveloping Shivaji Stadium in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. The project's outline was presented before the council during this discussion.
The road in North West Moti Bagh is currently in poor condition, having last been resurfaced in 2013. Before preparing an estimate for repairs, it was decided to consult CRRI to determine the best treatment for these roads.
The council's decisions reflect its commitment to improving infrastructure within its jurisdiction while seeking expert guidance from CRRI for optimal results.
