Polling Details

Bypolls were held on July 10 in 13 Assembly seats across Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh.

Seat Distribution

The seats were Raiganj, Ranaghat Dakshin, Bagda, and Maniktala in West Bengal; Dehra, Hamirpur, and Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh; Badrinath and Manglaur in Uttarakhand; Jalandhar West in Punjab; Rupauli in Bihar; Vikravandi in Tamil Nadu; and Amarwara in Madhya Pradesh.

Political Stakes in West Bengal

Both Trinamool Congress and BJP faced high stakes. The Trinamool Congress held the Maniktala seat, while the BJP previously held Raiganj, Ranaghat Dakshin, and Bagda before its MLAs switched to the Trinamool.

Himachal Pradesh Contest

The election was crucial for both veterans and newcomers, including Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, contesting from Dehra.

Manglaur Constituency

This Uttarakhand seat witnessed a three-way fight, traditionally held by Congress or BSP, with BJP never winning here.

Punjab's Litmus Test

The Jalandhar West bypoll was seen as a significant test for AAP leader and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Bihar Bypoll

The Rupauli seat's bypoll was due to JD(U) MLA Bima Bharti's resignation, who switched to contest Lok Sabha elections on an RJD ticket.

Tamil Nadu Triangle

In Vikravandi, DMK's candidate faced PMK's Anbumani and Naam Tamilar Katchi's Abinaya following the death of DMK legislator N Pughazhendhi.

Amarwara Contest

In Madhya Pradesh, the contest in the ST-reserved Amarwara seat was notable due to Congress MLA Kamlesh Shah's switch to BJP, facing Congress's Dheeran Shah Invati and GGP's Devraman Bhalavi.

Post-Lok Sabha Context

These bypolls were the first major electoral exercise after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where BJP won 240 seats and the INDIA bloc 232, with NDA securing a total of 293 seats.
