Non-Aligned Parties Face Setbacks in NDA vs INDIA Bloc Dominated LS Polls
New Delhi, June 6 - The landscape of Indian politics witnessed a significant transformation in the 2024 general elections, marking a resurgence of coalition politics. The electoral battle saw a direct confrontation between the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition's INDIA bloc. However, it was not just the major coalitions that drew attention. The fate of non-aligned parties such as the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Uttar Pradesh, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha, and YSR Congress Party in Andhra Pradesh highlighted a stark decline in their electoral fortunes.

The BSP, despite fielding the highest number of candidates nationwide at 488, failed to secure any seats, garnering only about 2.05% of the votes. This was a significant drop from the 10 seats and 3.62% vote share it achieved in 2019. Similarly, the BJD in Odisha was confined to just one seat, a sharp decrease from its previous 12 seats out of the total 21, with its vote share dipping slightly to 1.44% from 1.66%.
In Andhra Pradesh, despite the BJP's alliance with the Telugu Desam Party and Jana Sena, the YSR Congress Party saw its lead diminish to four seats from an impressive 22 seats in the 2019 polls. Its vote share also decreased to approximately 2.06%, down from 2.53%. Neighbouring Telangana's BRS did not lead in any seat, experiencing a drastic fall in its vote share to 0.57% from the previous election's 1.25%.
The BJP emerged as the single largest party but fell short of crossing the majority threshold. After a lengthy counting process that started at 8 am, the BJP was ahead or won in 240 seats, a decrease from the 303 seats it secured in the last Lok Sabha elections, underscoring the return to coalition governance. On the other hand, the Congress, integral to the INDIA alliance, showed significant improvement by leading or winning in 99 seats, a substantial increase from its previous tally of 52 seats. This gain notably came at the expense of BJP's stronghold areas like Rajasthan and Haryana, with the INDIA bloc collectively surpassing over 200 seats.
The results of the 2024 general elections underscore a pivotal shift towards coalition politics in India, reflecting changing voter preferences and political dynamics. Non-aligned parties faced considerable challenges, indicating a possible reevaluation of strategies for future electoral contests. The BJP's inability to secure a majority on its own and Congress's gains within the INDIA bloc highlight an evolving political landscape that could influence India's governance and policy direction in the coming years.
