NDA ally Upendra Kushwaha Says Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Should Resign, Here's Why
With only a few months left to much-anticipated Bihar Assembly Elections 2025, Rashtriya Lok Morcha president and NDA ally Upendra Kushwaha has suggested that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar consider stepping back from his responsibilities as the head of the Janata Dal (United), allowing him to fully concentrate on governance ahead of the crucial state elections.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Kushwaha extended warm birthday wishes to Nitish Kumar's son, Nishant Kumar, while simultaneously expressing a view shared by some within the party. "It may be time for Nitish ji to delegate party responsibilities so that his rich administrative experience can be focused on the development of Bihar," Kushwaha stated.

Call for Strengthening the Party Structure
Kushwaha's suggestion was made in the spirit of ensuring JD(U)'s long-term organisational strength. He remarked that numerous party workers and leaders believe that a timely transfer of responsibilities within the party would help energise its grassroots and prevent any internal drift.
"The time has come for a well-thought-out decision that secures JD(U)'s future. Delay could lead to challenges that are best addressed proactively," Kushwaha noted, reiterating his continued respect for Nitish Kumar's leadership and legacy.
Though Kushwaha parted ways with JD(U) in 2023 after previously merging his Rashtriya Lok Samata Party into it, he continues to position himself as a constructive voice within the NDA fold.
JD(U) Responds with Poise
Responding to the remarks, JD(U) chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar welcomed Kushwaha's suggestions as those of a well-wisher. "Kushwaha ji has served in important roles under Nitish ji's leadership. His thoughts reflect concern for the party's continued success," he said. Kumar also emphasised that any decision on leadership transition would be taken thoughtfully and in the best interest of the party and state.
The spokesperson added that JD(U), under Nitish Kumar's guidance, remains committed to inclusive governance and alliance cohesion.
Opposition Reacts with Familiar Rhetoric
Meanwhile, opposition leaders seized on the development to repeat earlier claims. RJD's Mrityunjay Tiwari remarked that Kushwaha's views validate their concerns over Nitish Kumar's active role in government. He also echoed past statements encouraging Nishant Kumar to formally enter politics.
However, political observers note that the opposition's commentary appears aimed more at creating political noise than offering substantive insight into internal NDA dynamics.
Looking Ahead
As Bihar moves closer to elections, leaders across the spectrum are realigning strategies. Within the NDA, such discussions are being seen as part of healthy dialogue aimed at strengthening governance and party functioning.
Upendra Kushwaha's remarks, delivered with politeness and strategic foresight, may open the door to internal introspection.
