NCP's Pitch for Alliance with Prakash Ambedkar's VBA Ahead of Maharashtra Polls

In a recent development from Mumbai, dated June 22, NCP legislator Amol Mitkari has sparked discussions within political circles by suggesting a potential alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), led by Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar, for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections. Mitkari, who serves as a member of the legislative council and as an NCP spokesperson, clarified that this perspective was his own and not an official stance of the party.

NCP Eyes VBA Alliance for Polls

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, currently aligns with the Mahayuti coalition, which also comprises the Shiv Sena and BJP. Amidst this political backdrop, Mitkari's proposition hints at a strategic shift that could influence the state's political landscape. He emphasized the significance of not underestimating NCP leaders within the coalition dynamics.

"As a party worker, I feel that if Prakash Ambedkar, who is a tall leader, joins hands with Ajit Pawar, who is an important leader, things would be different in Maharashtra. This is my personal opinion," Mitkari stated. It's noteworthy that Prakash Ambedkar is the grandson of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a figure of immense historical importance in India.

The suggestion comes amidst growing dissent within the ranks of the RSS and Shiv Sena regarding Ajit Pawar's inclusion in the Mahayuti alliance. However, VBA's Maharashtra unit chief Rekha Thakur has expressed reservations about aligning with the NCP as long as it remains part of the BJP-led coalition. This stance underscores the complexities involved in forming alliances in Maharashtra's multi-faceted political environment.

Prior attempts at alliance talks between the VBA and the Maha Vikas Aghadi—a coalition comprising Congress, NCP, SP, and Shiv Sena UBT—had not materialized before the Lok Sabha elections. This history adds another layer to the ongoing discussions about potential political reconfigurations ahead of the state assembly elections.

The unfolding scenario highlights the fluid nature of political alliances in Maharashtra, where strategic partnerships could significantly impact electoral outcomes. As parties navigate these dynamics, the possibility of new coalitions forming could redefine power structures within the state's political framework.
