NCP Demands 80-90 Seats for Assembly Elections; BJP Claims Majority
In a recent development in Maharashtra's political landscape, senior NCP leader and state minister Chhagan Bhujbal has put forth a demand for a significant number of seats for his party in the upcoming assembly elections. Bhujbal's request underscores the NCP's ambition to secure 80-90 seats out of the total 288 in the state assembly, aiming for a substantial win of around 50 to 60 seats. This demand comes amidst discussions on seat-sharing within the alliance, highlighting the competitive dynamics between the NCP and its ally, the BJP.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, representing the BJP, acknowledged his party's larger share in the contest but indicated that the final seat-sharing agreement would be determined after thorough discussions among the leaders of the three parties involved. The BJP, being the largest party in the state, had previously won 105 seats in the 2019 state polls, while the NCP had secured 54 seats when it was undivided.
Bhujbal's statement at a party meeting emphasized the need for a more significant number of seats for the NCP to contest in order to achieve a notable victory. He also expressed concerns over reports suggesting that Manusmriti, an ancient Hindu text, might be introduced into school curriculums. Bhujbal, a prominent leader from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community, voiced apprehensions about the implications of such a move on Dalit communities and reservation benefits.
The NCP leader highlighted efforts made to reassure Dalit communities that the BJP's electoral ambitions would not lead to constitutional amendments affecting reservation benefits. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself had refuted opposition claims regarding changes to reservation policies. However, Bhujbal pointed out that recent reports about introducing Manusmriti in schools have raised concerns among various communities.
The dialogue on seat allocation reflects ongoing negotiations within Maharashtra's ruling coalition, with each party vying for a favorable position ahead of the assembly elections. Fadnavis's comments suggest that while the BJP is poised to contest a larger number of seats, there is still room for discussion and compromise to finalize the seat-sharing formula. This political maneuvering is crucial for setting the stage for the upcoming electoral battle in Maharashtra.
