INS Sudarshini Begins Ten-Month Transoceanic Expedition to Strengthen Maritime Ties

The Indian Navy's sail training ship INS Sudarshini has set off on a ten-month expedition covering 22,000 nautical miles and visiting 18 ports in 13 countries. This journey highlights India's commitment to maritime cooperation and global friendship.

INS Sudarshini, a sail training ship of the Indian Navy, began a significant ten-month transoceanic journey on Tuesday. The vessel will cover 22,000 nautical miles and visit 18 ports across 13 countries. Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, initiated the voyage from Kochi naval base, marking the start of Lokayan 26.

The expedition is a testament to India's maritime ambitions and highlights its role in global maritime affairs, according to a Navy spokesperson. The ship had previously participated in an Operational Demonstration in Thiruvananthapuram during Navy Day celebrations in December. Vice Admiral Saxena highlighted the ship's role as India's ambassador, promoting international friendship.

Maritime Festivals and Celebrations

One of the voyage's highlights is INS Sudarshini's participation in Escale à Sète in France. This event, occurring between March and April, is one of Europe's leading maritime festivals. The ship will represent India alongside other renowned tall ships in the Mediterranean. Additionally, INS Sudarshini will join Sail 250 at New York during the International Parade of Sails for the USA's 250th Independence Day celebrations in July 2026.

The traditional send-off ceremony featured the three-masted barque unfurling its sails to the accompaniment of a naval band. Over its ten-month deployment, INS Sudarshini will traverse approximately 22,000 nautical miles and visit 18 ports across 13 countries. This journey aims to forge connections beyond oceans and borders.

Training and Heritage

INS Sudarshini was constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited and is a 54-metre sail training ship with 20 sails covering over 1,000 square metres. It provides an exceptional platform for sea trainees and officer cadets to master seamanship and navigation using wind and waves. The Navy spokesperson noted that this experience is invaluable for developing these timeless skills.

The ship carries the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam as it sails along ancient trade routes and modern sea lanes. This aligns with the vision of MAHASAGAR—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. A Lokayan 26 plaque was unveiled by Vice Admiral Saxena during the send-off ceremony.

This voyage not only showcases India's maritime prowess but also strengthens international ties through cultural exchanges at various ports. INS Sudarshini's journey embodies India's commitment to fostering global maritime cooperation and understanding.
