Navy initiates sea trials of 'INS Vagsheer' submarine
Signalling a significant step forward in enhancing India's naval strength and self-reliance, Indian Navy have commenced the sea trials of the sixth submarine of the Kalvari-class submarine INS Vagsheer.
This submarine is the Navy's fifth Kalvari-class or Project 75 (Yard 11880) and its induction marks a milestone towards bolstering India's maritime capabilities, safeguard its interests in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and strengthen its defence industrial base.

The submarine was launched last week from Kanhoji Angre Wet Basin of Mazagon Dock in Mumbai. INS Vaghsheer is scheduled for delivery to Indian Navy in early 2024 after completion of these trials.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd has delivered three submarines of Project-75 in 24 months and commencement of sea trials of sixth submarine is a significant milestone. This is indicative of the boost towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The submarine will now undergo intense trials of all its systems at sea like propulsion systems, weapons and sensors.
Expressing his views on INS Vagsheer's induction, defence analyst K. Venkatesh from renowned data and analytics company GlobalData said, "With an expected commissioning in early 2024, this last class submarine will significantly bolster the Indian Navy's maritime capabilities, safeguard its maritime interests, and strengthen its position in the IOR."
"The successful completion of Project 75, under which the Indian Navy is building six diesel-electric submarines, demonstrates India's growing self-reliance in defence production, promoting the development of the defence manufacturing sector and strengthening the country's defence industrial base," he added.
"According to GlobalData, India is projected to spend around $25 billion on submarines over the next 10 years to enhance its maritime capabilities. The involvement of Indian shipbuilders in these upcoming submarine projects enhances their capabilities and positions them as key players in the global submarine construction industry," Venkatesh informed.
India's strides in the defence sector, particularly in indigenous production and maritime capabilities, highlight its commitment to self-reliance and determination to become a key player in the global defence landscape.
As the country continues to invest in its naval forces and foster collaborations, it is expected to enhance its position as a significant regional maritime power.
