Navy Boat Collision with Passenger Ferry Near Mumbai Claims 13 Lives, 99 Rescued

A tragic incident occurred off the Mumbai coast when a Navy craft collided with a ferry, resulting in 13 deaths and the rescue of 99 individuals. The accident took place around 4 pm during engine trials of the Navy craft, which lost control and hit the passenger ferry Neel Kamal near Karanja. The ferry was en route from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist spot.

Navy Boat Collides with Ferry Near Mumbai

Immediately following the collision, extensive search and rescue operations were launched by the Navy, in collaboration with the Coast Guard and Marine Police. The efforts involved four naval helicopters, 11 naval crafts, one Coast Guard boat, and three Marine Police boats. Survivors were transported to nearby jetties and hospitals for treatment.

Rescue Operations and Casualties

The accident claimed 13 lives, including a Naval personnel and two individuals from the Original Equipment Manufacturer on board the Navy craft. According to Mumbai police, the deceased comprised seven men, four women, and two children. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reported that 101 people were rescued.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his sorrow over the incident on X, stating, "Deeply saddened by the loss of precious lives in the collision between passenger ferry and Indian Navy craft in Mumbai Harbour." He added that injured personnel from both vessels were receiving urgent medical care.

Government Response and Investigation

Fadnavis announced financial aid of Rs 5 lakh for the families of victims from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. An FIR was registered at Colaba police station against those responsible for the tragedy. The charges include causing death by negligence and endangering personal safety or life through rash navigation.

The FIR was based on a complaint by survivor Natharam Chaudhary, a resident of Mumbai's Sakinaka area. Late at night, police released names of ten deceased individuals. They included Mahendra Singh Shekhawat from the Navy and several passengers from both vessels.

Previous Incidents

This incident marks the second accident involving the Navy within a month. On November 21, INS Karanj collided with a fishing vessel off Goa's coast, resulting in two fatalities. Such incidents highlight ongoing concerns about maritime safety in Indian waters.

The tragic event has prompted authorities to intensify search efforts for any missing persons. The Navy and Coast Guard continue deploying multiple assets to ensure all individuals are accounted for. Meanwhile, investigations are underway to determine the cause of this unfortunate accident.
