Navi Mumbai Customs Uncover ₹9.65 Cr Areca Nuts Smuggled as Bitumen

In a significant operation at the Jawaharlal Nehru Custom House (JNCH) in Navi Mumbai's Nhava Sheva, authorities seized 189.6 metric tonnes of areca nuts valued at approximately Rs 9.65 crore. The seizure was made after the nuts were found to be smuggled into the country, cleverly disguised as bitumen in the import documents. This action was spearheaded by the Special Intelligence and Investigation Branch (SIIB) of the JNCH, highlighting their commitment to thwarting smuggling attempts.

₹9.65 Cr Areca Nut Smuggling Foiled

The discovery was made possible thanks to the vigilance of the Container Scanning Division (CSD) officers, who noticed anomalies in a suspicious scan, prompting them to hold nine containers for a detailed examination. Their investigation revealed that areca nuts were ingeniously hidden behind bitumen drums, employing wooden pallets wrapped in black plastic to mimic the appearance of bitumen drums and evade detection.

The operation led to the arrest of a director associated with the Importer Exporter Code (IEC) holder company involved in this illicit activity. The modus operandi uncovered during this operation showcases the lengths to which smugglers will go to bypass customs and introduce contraband into the market.

Areca nuts are subject to a high tariff value and duty structure in India, attracting a duty of 110 percent plus Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST), aimed at protecting domestic producers. By misdeclaring these goods, unscrupulous importers attempt to evade these substantial duties. In this case, the duty evasion was estimated to be around Rs 11.63 crore.

Following the seizure, authorities conducted multiple searches and recorded statements from individuals connected to this case. The investigation is ongoing as officials work to uncover further details and possibly apprehend more individuals involved in this smuggling operation.

This incident underscores the challenges faced by customs officials in combating smuggling and highlights the sophisticated methods employed by smugglers to circumvent customs duties. It also reflects the dedication of JNCH officials in safeguarding India's economic interests and ensuring compliance with its laws.
