Nationwide E-Passport Launch: How the New System Affects Your Travel Documents

India has officially completed the rollout of its new e-passport system under the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) V2.0, introducing chip-enabled booklets for all new applications and renewals both within the country and at Indian missions abroad. This nationwide shift enhances digital security and speeds up immigration checks, while travellers holding a standard passport remain unaffected for the moment.

What happens to your existing passport

Current passports continue to be valid until their expiry date. Travellers do not need to switch to an e-passport unless their booklet is damaged, has run out of pages, or is due for renewal. Anyone applying for a passport now-whether in India or overseas-will automatically receive the chip-enabled version.

Under PSP V2.0 and the Global Passport Seva Programme for missions abroad, all newly issued or renewed passports are now e-passports. Applicants do not have to select a separate option or fill out additional forms, as the upgrade is implemented automatically across all passport offices and embassies.

The upgrade also introduces a revamped website and mobile app featuring auto-filled forms, simpler document uploads, UPI and QR code payment options, and AI-driven chat and voice bots for real-time assistance.

The e-passport maintains the look of the traditional booklet, featuring a small gold symbol on the cover. Inside, an embedded RFID chip and antenna store the holder's personal and biometric details that appear on the data page. This information is digitally signed using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), aligning with global electronic verification systems and helping curb identity fraud.
