Cyber Space Deemed Crucial for National Security by Security Chief
Cybersecurity has emerged as a cornerstone of national security, influencing decision-making processes and potentially disrupting services, according to Lt Gen M U Nair, National Cyber Security Coordinator. Speaking at the conclusion of the 48-hour Pentathon 2024 held at Amity University's Noida campus, Lt Gen Nair emphasized the critical role of cyberspace in safeguarding national interests. The event, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, highlighted the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures.

With India leading in data consumption globally, Lt Gen Nair pointed out the necessity for heightened awareness among users regarding the risks associated with inadequate cyber hygiene. Operating under the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), the National Cyber Security Coordinator underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing cyber threats and urged participants to devise innovative solutions to counteract them.
The competition encouraged participants to tackle challenges within the cyber landscape, including those induced by artificial intelligence, through learning new skills and adopting best practices in ethical hacking. Lt Gen Nair's call for innovation and collaboration among students underscored his belief that cybersecurity is a collective responsibility.
T G Sitharam, chairperson of the All India Council for Technical Education, also spoke at the event, highlighting India's extensive digital infrastructure. He referenced significant initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat scheme, Aadhaar system, and COVID-19 vaccination certificate issuance as examples of India's digital advancements. Sitharam stressed the importance of equipping India's annual cohort of 1.5 million engineering graduates with the necessary skills to address vulnerabilities in cybersecurity effectively.
The emphasis on cybersecurity at events like Pentathon 2024 reflects a growing recognition of its importance in protecting national security and personal data. As cyber threats evolve, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation among India's future engineers and cybersecurity professionals is essential to maintaining the integrity of the nation's digital infrastructure.
