Nation celebrates Navratri, Modi begins nine-day fast

Adityanath Yogi will also be observing fast for Chaitra Navratri, a spring festival held to honour goddess Durga.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin his nine-day fast from Tuesday to mark the Chaitra Navratri festival.

Reports say that Modi has been observing the ritual Navratri fast every year for over 35 years. During this period, PM Modi will eat only some fruits in the evening and drink water with lime juice. In September, 2014, he observed a Kartik Navratri fast while on tour in the United States and the menu at the high tables had to be tweaked for his convenience.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath Yogi will also be observing fast for Chaitra Navratri, a spring festival held to honour goddess Durga.

It must be noted that Chaitra Navratri is different from Sharada Navaratri, which is held in Autumn and culminates in Durga Puja and Dussehra. Chaitra Navratri culminates into Rama Navami on the ninth day.

Meanwhile, millions thronged temples dedicated to goddess across the country on the first day of Chaitra Navratri.

Navratri celebrations at Mumba Devi temple

Devotees in large numbers thronged Mumbai's Mumba Devi temple for special prayers on the occation of Chaitra Navratri.

Thousands visited Jhandewala temple near Karol Bagh in New Delhi on the occasion of Chaitra Navratri.

Sri Kali Mata Temple in Moradabad was abuzz with activity as thousands gathered for special Navratri prayers.

Navratri prayers at Vaishno Devi

Large number of devotees thronged Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, Jammu, to attend special prayers on the occasion of Chaitra Navratri.

Besides this, devotees have been thronging at Bawe Wali Mata temple in Bahu fort and other Durga shrines across Jammu region.

Special prayers were held in Guwhati's Kamakhya temple on Navratri. The people across the country are performing special prayers with religious enthusiasm and fervour.
