Maya Kodnani
Ahmedabad, July 30:Former Gujarat minister of state for women and child development, Maya Kodnani has been granted bail in the Naroda Patiya case that claimed the lives of 97 people.

She, along with Bajrang Dal's Babu Bajrangi was convicted in the 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre that followed after the Godra massacre. In August 2012, a special SIT court had sentenced her to 18 years life imprisonment.

However, her term would however start after she completes 10 years in jail under section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of IPC. Thus, she would have to effectively serve a total of 28 years of imprisonment.

Among 29 others convicted by the court, 7 others, which include Babu Bajrangi, were given enhanced life term and will have to first serve a 10-year term under section 326 before their life sentences begin. However, 22 others were given simple life imprisonment of 14 years.

Kodnani was granted bail earlier too on medical grounds.
