CCTV footage captured the assailant, dressed in a muffler and armed with a pistol, approaching the seated headmaster, who was speaking on the phone. Kumar was shot in the left leg before the perpetrator fled the scene.

Kumar was promptly taken to Ekangarsarai Primary Health Center by his colleagues and is currently undergoing treatment. Witnesses reported that the assailant had called out to Kumar from outside the school before entering the staff room and firing the shot.

Earlier, the same individual had assaulted a student at the school but was released by the police due to a lack of complaints from students. Police arrived at the school upon receiving reports of the shooting and detained two suspects in connection with the attack. Authorities suspect that four individuals may have been involved in the crime.

The investigation is ongoing, and while the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, initial assessments suggest it was intended to instil fear. The incident occurred on the same day as Prime Minister Modi's visit to Nalanda to inaugurate the new Nalanda University campus, prompting heightened security measures in the area.

The ancient Nalanda University, which thrived from the fifth century onwards, attracted students from across the globe before its destruction in the 12th century by invaders. To visit the new Nalanda University, modelled after the 1,600-year-old Nalanda Mahavihar, one previously had to get off at Bakhtiyarpur railway station. This station is named after Bakhtiyar Khilji, the invader blamed for destroying the ancient university. The fire he started is said to have burned for three months, consuming over nine million manuscripts.

While inaugurating the new campus on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked, "Nalanda is more than just a name; it stands for identity and respect. Fire can burn books, but it can't destroy knowledge."
