Nagaland Business Community Ends Shutdown After Government Steps In

Following a three-day complete halt of business operations throughout Nagaland, the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CNCCI) has decided to end its protest. This decision came after the state government stepped in to address the concerns raised by the CNCCI. The protest was initially sparked by what the industry body described as "unabated extortion" by underground factions.

Nagaland Shutdown Ends

Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, who is also in charge of Home Affairs, announced that the government has taken the grievances seriously. He stated that directives have been issued to the Director-General of Police (DGP) to implement strict measures against these illegal activities. This move by the government led to the CNCCI, with backing from 16 District Chambers of Commerce and its Executive Council, calling off the "all Nagaland Indefinite Shutter Down."

The shutdown began in Dimapur, Nagaland's commercial hub, on Friday and quickly spread to other districts following the CNCCI's call to action. The industry body had called on the state government for immediate intervention to halt the continuous extortions, intimidations, and summons by various underground groups.

In a gesture of easing back into normalcy, the CNCCI announced a temporary relaxation period from 12 noon to 6 pm on Monday. However, different business associations across various districts have set their own relaxation timings, with some extending from 6 am to 6 pm. The reopening saw significant traffic congestion as residents hurried to replenish their stocks of essential goods.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by businesses in Nagaland due to illegal demands and the swift response by the state government to mitigate these issues. The collaborative effort between the CNCCI and state authorities underscores a shared commitment to ensuring a stable and secure environment for commerce in Nagaland.
