Naga Groups See Consultative Meeting as Path to Political Solution
Naga groups are hopeful that the consultative meeting organised by the Nagaland government will pave the way for a political solution. The Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups (WC, NNPGs) has praised the Nagaland government for arranging this joint consultative meeting on the crucial political issue. According to a statement from its media cell, this initiative should remove all obstacles to a political resolution.

The Nagaland government has scheduled a meeting with legislators, MPs, and other stakeholders on Thursday to discuss the long-standing Naga political issue. The WC, NNPGs noted that the Centre and NSCN-IM concluded their dialogue after 18 years of talks, culminating in the Framework Agreement signed on August 3, 2015. However, it claimed that this single-page agreement remains a secret, inaccessible to the Naga people, and shrouded in mystery.
Framework Agreement and Agreed Position
In 2017, the Centre officially invited WC, NNPGs for political negotiations, leading to the signing of the Agreed Position on November 17 of the same year. The consultative meeting on Thursday is within the executive power parameters of Nagaland state. Therefore, any resolution must endorse matters settled solely concerning Nagaland state.
The WC, NNPGs expressed optimism that the joint consultation's resolution would not place all responsibility back on Naga political groups alone. There must be an endorsement of whatever matters have already been agreed upon between the Government of India and the negotiators. Such a responsible state will boost confidence for the Government of India to enter into a political agreement and implement it immediately during the current government's tenure.
Political Representation and Territorial Integrity
All unresolved political issues will be negotiated through new legislative and constitutional bodies formed through the forthcoming agreement. The WC, NNPGs also emphasised that it would be unwise for Nagaland's legislature and tribal leaders to wait for favourable political conditions and settlements in neighbouring states.
The political and tribal leadership of Nagaland must prioritise the territorial integrity of Nagaland while acknowledging the rights of their land and people in other states. The statement highlighted that an honourable and responsible state would provide impetus and confidence for entering into a political agreement with immediate effect.
The consultative meeting aims to clear away all cobwebs hindering a political solution. The WC, NNPGs appreciates this initiative by the Nagaland government as it seeks to resolve long-standing issues through dialogue and negotiation.
The Framework Agreement signed between the Centre and NSCN-IM remains undisclosed to the public. The contours of these talks are still mysterious to many Naga people. This secrecy has led to calls for transparency in negotiations affecting their future.
The upcoming consultative meeting is seen as a crucial step towards resolving these issues. It is expected to endorse all matters settled concerning Nagaland state alone while addressing unresolved political matters through new legislative bodies.
The WC, NNPGs hopes that this resolution will not revert responsibility solely onto Naga political groups but instead lead to an endorsement of previously agreed matters between India and negotiators. This approach aims to foster confidence in reaching a political agreement during the current government's tenure.
The emphasis is on maintaining Nagaland's territorial integrity while recognising rights in other states. This balanced approach seeks to ensure that all stakeholders' interests are considered in any future agreements.
The consultative meeting represents a significant opportunity for progress towards a lasting political solution. By addressing long-standing issues through dialogue and negotiation, it aims to pave the way for a more stable and prosperous future for Nagaland.
The WC, NNPGs believes that endorsing previously agreed matters will provide confidence for immediate implementation during the present government's tenure. This approach underscores the importance of honourable state conduct in fostering trust and cooperation between negotiating parties.
In conclusion, Naga groups remain optimistic about resolving long-standing issues through this consultative meeting. By addressing unresolved matters through new legislative bodies and maintaining territorial integrity, they hope to achieve a lasting political solution beneficial for all stakeholders involved.
