Investigation into Mysterious Deaths in Jammu and Kashmir Reveals Presence of Neurotoxins
Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir are investigating the mysterious deaths of 14 people in a remote village over the past month. Officials have been tasked with analysing reports from various institutions to uncover the cause. Initial findings suggest neurotoxins may be involved, but further investigation is needed to confirm this, according to officials.

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo led a meeting with divisional and district officials, along with health experts from national institutions, to assess the situation in Badhal village, Rajouri district. He stressed the importance of collaboration between the Health and Police departments to thoroughly examine reports from reputable institutions to determine the cause of these deaths.
Coordination Between Departments
The Chief Secretary instructed the police to use all available resources, including scientific methods, to advance the investigation. Similarly, the health department was directed to study reports for potential leads. Dulloo mentioned that reports from various institutions are now available, with more expected soon, which should help conclude the investigations.
During the meeting, experts presented their analysis of samples collected from affected individuals and the area. They ruled out viral, bacterial, or microbial infections as causes of death. Instead, they suggested that the deaths might be localised and possibly linked epidemiologically.
Neurotoxins Under Scrutiny
Experts disclosed that certain neurotoxins were found in samples from the deceased. These findings are being further investigated to understand their role in the fatalities. The spokesperson added that these neurotoxins are a significant focus of ongoing research.
From December 7, 2024, 14 deaths occurred among 38 affected individuals in three separate incidents in Badhal village. The exact causes remain unknown. Officials have implemented several measures, including deploying Rapid Response Teams and analysing samples from humans and animals.
Efforts to Identify Causes
The government has sought assistance from reputed health institutions nationwide to determine the actual cause of these deaths. Water sources are also being tested as part of this comprehensive investigation.
Dulloo listened to experts' suggestions on future actions during the meeting. He emphasised that understanding these deaths' causes is crucial for preventing further incidents and ensuring public safety.
The investigation continues as authorities work diligently to uncover the reasons behind these mysterious deaths in Badhal village. The focus remains on identifying any environmental or other factors contributing to this tragic situation.
