Mumbai Tragedy: Search Continues for Woman Who Jumped Off Atal Setu
In a distressing event that marks the first of its kind on the newly inaugurated Atal Setu, a 43-year-old woman, identified as Kinjal Kantilal Shah, took a tragic leap off the sea bridge that links south Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. The incident, which occurred on Monday afternoon, has since prompted an extensive search operation. Despite efforts spanning three days, authorities have yet to recover her body. Kinjal, a medical professional dealing with depression, left behind a note at her residence in Mumbai, shedding light on her intentions.

The Navi Mumbai Police, spearheading the search, have enlisted the aid of local fishermen after their initial attempts failed to locate Kinjal. The operation has seen the deployment of speed boats from the Coastal Security Department and assistance from local villagers and rescue teams. Despite these concerted efforts, including the use of private and fishermen's boats, the search has so far been fruitless. The local fishermen's associations have been notified and urged to report any sightings of the body in the sea or along the shores.
A Tragic Decision
Kinjal's journey to the bridge began near her home in the Navin Asha building on Dadasaheb Phalke Road in Parel area of Mumbai. She hailed a taxi and requested to be taken to Atal Setu. Upon reaching a section of the sea bridge, she asked the driver to stop. Despite his initial reluctance, he complied with her insistence. Moments after exiting the taxi, she jumped off the bridge. The taxi driver promptly reported the incident to the Navi Mumbai police, triggering an immediate response from various authorities.
Background and Motivation
According to police reports, Kinjal had been battling severe depression for eight years and was under medical treatment. On the day of the incident, she informed her father of her intention to go out for some work. Her father later discovered her suicide note upon returning home, in which she expressed her plan to end her life by jumping off Atal Setu due to her long-standing struggle with depression.
Atal Setu: A New Connection
The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri--Nhava Sheva Atal Setu stands as India's longest sea bridge and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January. This architectural marvel connects South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, aiming to facilitate easier commutes between these two major regions.
The incident has cast a shadow over this feat of engineering, bringing to light issues surrounding mental health and the importance of support for those in need. As authorities continue their search for Kinjal Kantilal Shah, this tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the struggles faced by individuals dealing with mental health challenges.
