Adani Energy Commissions 1,000 MW Power Link to Boost Clean Energy Supply to Mumbai

Adani Energy Solutions has commissioned a 1000 MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link between Kudus and Aarey in Mumbai. The project, including an urban-friendly 30 km overhead and 50 km underground corridor, features a compact HVDC substation and enhances grid reliability, reduces outage risk, and supports renewable energy imports for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL) has commissioned a 1,000 megawatt high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link aimed at strengthening Mumbai’s power infrastructure and increasing the supply of clean energy to the city and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The project has been developed by Adani Electricity Mumbai Infrastructure Limited (AEMIL), a subsidiary of AESL, and connects Kudus to Aarey. It includes a 30-kilometre overhead transmission line and a 50-kilometre underground corridor designed to operate within Mumbai’s densely populated urban environment. The company stated that the project features the world’s first compact HVDC substation, designed specifically for space-constrained metropolitan areas.

The transmission link was conceived after the October 2020 Mumbai blackout, which exposed weaknesses in the city’s electricity network. The additional 1,000 MW capacity is expected to enhance grid reliability, reduce outage risks, and lower dependence on in-city power generation.

The HVDC link enables Mumbai to draw more electricity from outside the city, including renewable energy generated in other regions. It is expected to ease pressure on existing infrastructure as power demand continues to rise across the MMR.

The project uses Voltage Source Converter (VSC)-based HVDC technology, allowing faster and more precise control of power flows, improved voltage stability, and enhanced grid reliability. It also provides black-start capability, enabling restoration of power without relying on external sources during outages.

Kandarp Patel, CEO of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd, said the commissioning of the transmission line provides Mumbai with a modern power corridor capable of integrating large-scale renewable energy with high reliability, while strengthening grid stability and energy security.

The Kudus–Aarey link is among the largest urban HVDC infeeds globally and is expected to play a key role in supporting Mumbai’s transition towards a cleaner and more resilient power system.
