Mumbai rains: Schools shut, offices closed as heavy downpour to continue today

Following instructions from state education minister Vinod Tawde calling for all school and college students to stay indoors, the University of Mumbai announced a holiday on August 30.

All educational institutions will remain shut due to the Mumbai rains. Heavy downpour will continue today, the met department has warned. The low pressure area which caused the deluge will shift towards Gujarat by Wednesday afternoon and then move to the Arabian Sea, the weather department also said.

The state government announced a holiday for all educational institutions in Mumbai on Wednesday. Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis asked people to stay at home unless there is an emergency.

    Following instructions from state education minister Vinod Tawde calling for all school and college students to stay indoors, the University of Mumbai announced a holiday on August 30.

    "Since the weather forecast says it will rain continuously over the next 24 hours, the university will remain shut on Wednesday and we request all affiliated colleges to remain shut," said a circular released by the university on Tuesday evening.

    Fadnavis said that only those employees working in critical departments would be on duty today.
