Mumbai Rains Lead to Railway Disruptions: Harbour Line and WR Hit
Heavy rains in Mumbai and its surrounding areas caused significant disruptions on Monday night, leading to the suspension of Harbour line services of Central Railway. Waterlogging at Wadala station forced the suspension of services between Wadala and CSMT at 10:15 pm, while trains continued to operate between Mankhurd and Panvel, according to a Central Railway spokesperson.

Tracks on Western Railway between Dadar and Matunga Road were submerged around 10 pm, while Central Railway tracks were under water at Dadar and Vidyavihar on the Main line and at Wadala on the Harbour line, sources reported. The fast corridor of Western Railway was also impacted due to waterlogging and a track changing point failure on the fifth line near Matunga station, they added.
Impact on Public Transport
The heavy rainfall throughout the day also disrupted BEST bus services. Many buses had to take alternate routes to avoid waterlogged areas such as Parel, Gandhi Market, Sangam Nagar, and Malad subway. Despite these challenges, the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) claimed it achieved 100% punctuality on Monday amid the heavy rains.
MMMOCL reported that it ferried 1,41,949 passengers by operating 282 metro services, including 24 additional ones. "Despite the heavy rains and challenging weather conditions, Metro Lines 2A and 7 have continued to operate smoothly, providing a dependable mode of transportation for Mumbaikars," MMMOCL stated. These metro lines run between Andheri West to Dahisar and Andheri East to Dahisar.
Flooding in Low-Lying Areas
Heavy rains since early morning led to traffic disruptions and intermittent stoppage of train services. Low-lying areas in Chembur, Bhandup, Sion, Gandhi Market, Hindmata, and Dadar experienced flooding. The continuous downpour caused significant inconvenience for commuters across the city.
A Western Railway spokesperson mentioned that although there was water on the tracks, it did not affect the running of trains. However, trains on the fast corridor halted due to a point failure on the fifth line. Efforts were underway to fix this issue.
The situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Mumbai's public transport system during heavy rains. Authorities continue to work towards maintaining service continuity despite adverse weather conditions.
The disruptions caused by waterlogging underscore the need for improved infrastructure to handle such weather events. Ensuring reliable transportation is crucial for the daily lives of Mumbaikars.
Efforts by various transport authorities aim to mitigate these issues and provide uninterrupted services during monsoon seasons. The city's resilience is tested each year as it navigates through these challenges.
