Mumbai Police Registers FIR Over Aamir Khan's Deepfake Political Endorsement Video
In a recent development that has stirred the Mumbai entertainment and political circles, an FIR has been lodged against an unidentified individual for creating and circulating a deepfake video featuring renowned actor Aamir Khan. The video misleadingly shows Khan endorsing a political party, a claim that has been vehemently denied by the actor's representatives. The case, registered at the Khar Police Station on behalf of Khan's office, invokes serious charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act.

The contentious 27-second clip, which employs artificial intelligence (AI) to edit Khan into a scene from an old episode of his TV show "Satyamev Jayate," falsely portrays him discussing political rhetoric. This incident has prompted a swift response from Khan's team, emphasizing the actor's long-standing policy of neutrality towards political parties. Over his 35-year career, Khan has been involved in various Election Commission public awareness campaigns but has steered clear of direct political endorsements.
A spokesperson for Aamir Khan articulated the actor's shock and concern over the misuse of AI to fabricate such content. The statement highlighted Khan's dedication to impartiality in political matters and his contributions to electoral awareness without aligning with any political entity. The spokesperson also clarified that the video in question is entirely fabricated, underscoring the actor's commitment to truth and integrity.
The misuse of deepfake technology has raised alarms about its potential to mislead the public and tarnish reputations. This incident not only affects Aamir Khan but also signals a growing threat to public figures and the need for stringent measures against digital impersonation. The Mumbai Police's Cyber Crime Cell is currently investigating the matter, aiming to trace the origins of the deepfake video and hold the responsible parties accountable.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by advanced digital technologies in spreading misinformation. As authorities work to combat these threats, public awareness and vigilance become paramount in distinguishing between genuine and manipulated content.
